Ada Lovelace Day: celebrate women in technology

March 23rd, 2009

Tomorrow, 24 March, is the first official Ada Lovelace Day: a day for celebrating women’s achievements in technology. Ada Lovelace was the first computer programmer way back in the 1830’s, who foresaw uses for computers that even Charles Babbage himself didn’t dream of. Sadly, she died at age 36 and never got the chance to see some of these uses in practice.

Tomorrow you can help celebrate Ada’s – and millions of other women’s – contributions to technology by blogging about a woman whom you admire for their work in tech. Once you’ve written your post, be sure to add it to the Ada Lovelace Collection for all the world to see. It’s already 24 March in some parts of the world, so you can be inspired by reading the stories that have already been posted here. If you’re in London tomorrow, you can also pop over to The Science Museum to meet Ada and learn more about her work.

Harris hawk at Somerset House

Harris hawk

Harris hawk spotted today at Somerset House attracting quite a bit of attention. Keeper says it used to be a hobby but now he is charged with pest control of pigeons and seagulls. Patrolling Trafalgar Square can apparently be a bit dicey due to competition from Peregrine falcons that have nested in St. Martin’s.

Microsoft cheats web standards once again

February 13th, 2009

ie8-w-acidfrown1A day of mixed news today with Molly Holzschlag joining the Opera team  which is of course great news — and Microsoft’s reversing direction once again on the standards compliance of IE8. About a year ago, Microsoft announced that they would ship IE8 in standards compliant mode by default – apparently a huge step forward to the surprise and joy of the standards community.

Would IE finally join the ranks of standards compliant browsers and make our lives as webdesigners and developers easier and the end user experience so much better?
