Hello everyone,
a few words on how to publish your own posts to the cK website. As cK members, everyone has the role of author, meaning you can write your own posts, edit them and publish them to the site. The site has not been very busy but if you feel you want to contribute, please do :) Here is how it works at the moment (could be extended in future, too).
Our site offers up its content in two different views:
– for public view –
CATEGORIES: news & pix
anything that gets published here will be available to view on the main site.
– for members-only –
CATEGORY: members + subcategories
anything private and confidential to the collective should be published under this category (or its subcategories, currently: ‘official cK stuff’ and ‘technical stuff’). These posts are protected via their categories and will not be accessible to anyone, only logged-in cK members.
This should be all you need to get going ;)
If you are new to WordPress entirely and find this all rather discombobulating ;-) — don’t worry, feel free to get in touch via comments here or email, happy to help! And if you would like to learn a little more, here’s a basic WordPress manual for starters :)
We have a desk available at the office of common Knowledge, a network of people who support the not-for-profit sector.
If you work in that sector or are an illustrator, campaigner, journalist or run a social enterprise – we could have just the set-up you’re looking for. We have an active, friendly and vibrant office of like-minded freelancers and small companies.
Facilities
Mail address and reception. Industrial strength fast internet. Desk space full-time or shared by arrangement. Use of kitchen facilities.
How it works
We each pay £220 per month for a full-time desk or pro-rata for part-time. We have good relations with our landlord, the Young Foundation, and the other non-profit organisations in the building complex. The only way to get the feel of it is to visit us at 18 Victoria Park Square, London E2 9PF. We’d be delighted to meet you and show you the facilities. Desk holders can use the quiet room for meetings free up to an allocation and the Young Foundation has bigger rentable rooms as well.
Situation
Very close to the Central Line (Bethnal Green) and London Overground (Bethnal Green or Cambridge Heath) and Buses 8, 388, 106, 254, D3, D6. The building is the beautiful 17th century listed home of the Young Foundation surrounded by ancient plane trees behind Museum Gardens and the V&A Museum of Childhood. We occupy the first floor having a large room with desks and a quiet/training/meeting room.

Before you shreve, get some last minute warmth from this annual assembly of friends and good people. We know you enjoyed dry January so much that you’re just dying to give up alcohol for Lent..
But we say no to austerity, no to Trump and no to things we don’t like.
Because you never know when things may get even worse!
So on Tuesday February 28th from 6 – 11pm at 18 Victoria Park Square, E2 9PF in the Michael Young room you’ll find food, drink, music, good company and a little bit of warm carnival spirit.
All our friends are welcome with masks or without. Do let us know if you’re coming and pass on the word.

Red Ink’s lovely Christmas Card drawn by Tim
Left to right, Steve, Gulya, Georgia, John, Tim and Jude. This is really the front office plus Tim.
We are getting there but Tim has caught a little gloom. It’s to be expected when you’re bombing other countries. As always, things are on the change here and also we are doubling the size of the training/meeting/quiet room
Christmas lunch 16 December for the invited. The Annual Mardi Gras party on Feb 9th (Teusday, of course) – you can get into that.
Mazel tov!

Here’s a link to a rather splendid guide to WordPress. It’s aimed at site editors and administrators and is clearly written and suitable for beginners to people with an intermediate level of expertise.
It’s that time again. To all our friends, please come to our Mardi Gras party. There will be lots of delicious food, drink, music and good company. We’d love to see you there.
So it’s a Tuesday….it’s Fat Tuesday. Carnival! Imagine you’re not in England. Imagine you’re not you. Wear a mask if you want!
Why a database?
We are very aware that the lives of many former Ruskin students have been recorded in prestigious biographical collections such as the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography or in the various volumes of the Dictionary of Labour Biography. But such existing material has never been gathered together in one, searchable, place.
We are also very conscious, of course, of the important contributions former Ruskin students have made to the lives of their countries and communities and families – contributions that have yet to be publicly recorded and memorialised collectively.
I’m proud to have been asked to develop (what it is to be hoped may turn out to only be the prototype for) the newruskinarchives launched today:
This website is a collective archive bringing together in one site information about former students – alive and dead – who were students at Ruskin College, Oxford since its inception in 1899.
Obviously within commonKnowledge’s networks we’re likely to know of former students of Ruskin College – hopefully this news will reach them and they’ll be encouraged to help crowdsource their own lost history.
